Two Tennessee Nursing Home Employees Fired for Cell Phone Use
A recent Tennessee Department of Health investigation led to the termination of two employees of Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Jon Howard, the facility Administrator, has stated that the company had "re-educated the entire staff on the existing policy regarding the use of cell phones by employees on the premises. Under the policy, an employee caught with a personal cell phone in a resident area is subject to immediate termination." It is not known whether the cell phone use involved photographs taken of residents.
Pigeon Forge Care and Rehabilitation currently has a two star rating, according to the new rating system instituted by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. A two star rating is indicative of a below average facility. In fact, 2008 surveys at the facility found violations in reporting changes in condition, helping residents with activities of daily living such as eating, drinking, and grooming, and ensuring that the facility is free of accident-causing dangers. The facility was cited in both February and October 2008.
