New York Nursing Home Neglect Caught on Tape

Two licensed practical nurses and two certified nurse aides were caught on surveillance tapes over a six week period seriously neglecting a disabled resident, who required assistance with all activities of daily living. Over a six week period, surveillance tapes at Medford Multicare Center for Living in Suffolk, New York revealed that staff failed to move and turn the patient for hours at a time, failed to provide water for the resident whose only source of hydration was through his gastrostomy tube, and left him sitting in his own waste for almost a day.

Facility staff also failed to perform range of motion exercises to prevent muscle contractions, failed to provide a shower for more than one week, and failed to use the appropriate number of aides to transfer the resident using a Hoyer Lift. In fact, one aide was seen using her cell phone while transferring the patient without assistance and on another occasion, this aide struck the resident's head on the side rail of the bed while performing a transfer.

Rima Chaudhry, Toni Miller, Betty Cheslak, and Jacqueline Francis are all accused of falsifying business records and endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person. The investigation at the facility continues and more arrests are anticipated.
