Why Are They Getting Paid?

An Iowa nursing home received multiple citations for employees ignoring the needs of its residents. Not only were employees seen walking through urine while providing care (and not cleaning it up), they refused to provide residents with water, gave double medications and stole medications. They even allowed one resident to escape the facility. That resident was later seen crawling along the shoulder of a highway. Fortunately, the resident was not killed.

In this same facility, Granger Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, one completely dependent resident was given little help with breakfast. State inspectors watched while the resident pointed at a cereal bowl. A worker stopped and put milk and sugar on the cereal and walked away. Twenty minutes later, another worker was stopped by the resident, but that employee also walked away without assisting the resident. A few minutes later, the resident was wheeled out of the dining room having eaten little, if any, food. That same resident received no assistance with lunch later that day.

This nursing home was also cited for taking a resident's property. In this case, an employee took a resident's pet cat while the resident was eating. The employee took the cat home.

Not surprisingly, Granger Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has been temporarily banned from accepting new Medicaid patients.
